Plastics for Plumbing

For over 20 years, Solvay Advanced Polymers has been helping water handling device manufacturers discover the performance and cost advantages of using high-performance plastics in pressurized hot water systems. Our materials are globally approved for drinking water (NSF, KTW, WRc) and have a proven track record in successfully replacing brass, copper and stainless steel.

Solvay Advanced Polymers is part of the Solvay Plumbing Group, a consortium of companies that also includes Solvay Padanaplast, a supplier of cross-linkable polyethylene, and Solvay Solexis, a manufacturer of fluoropolymers. Together, these companies offer the broadest portfolio of high-performance plastics for the plumbing industry. For more information about Solvay high-performance plastics used in water-handling systems, download the Solvay Plumbing Brochure or visit the  Solvay Plumbing Website.

Udel polysulfone (PSU) delivers low creep, toughness, resistance to oxidative aging and excellent dimensional stability in hot water and steam. It is toxicologically inert and has extensive regulatory clearance for water, food and medical applications.

Radel R polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) offers many of the same performance features as Udel polysulfone along with higher resistance to fatigue, better long-term exposure to hydrostatic stress, extremely high impact strength, and exceptional chemical resistance.

Acudel modified PPSU opens the door to more cost-sensitive applications that require toughness and chemical resistance as well as hydrolytic and dimensional stability.

Amodel polyphthalamide (PPA) offers a good balance of mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. It can be used in cold and hot water applications. It fills the performance gap between sulfone polymers and standard polyamides by delivering better hydrolytic stability, oxidative resistance and higher mechanical properties.

Ixef polyarylamide (PARA) exhibits outstanding strength and stiffness, making it a good candidate for metal replacement in cold water applications.

* For intermittant water contact high-performance polyamides can be utilized. They are also useful in structural applications.
