As the number of electric motors in vehicles increases, so do concerns about increased costs, weight, and the availability of space.
Solvay Advanced Polymers offers a variety of resins with a proven track record for replacing metal, consolidating functionality, and reducing weight and overall cost.
Electric motor parts, such as end plates, brush holders, and armature insulator standoffs, molded from AMODEL polyphthalamide (PPA) resins, such as AS-1566 HS, AS-1133 HS, and AS-4133 HS or XYDAR LCP, are in high volume production. Many of these applications replace metal parts reducing cost and weight and, in some cases, multiple motor functions are integrated reducing the overall size of the assembly.
In still other instances, AMODEL PPA was selected to replace polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or thermoset materials to improve impact strength, practical toughness, and processability. RADEL R-5800 NT polyphenylsulfone is gaining popularity in replacing more-costly, less-environmentally friendly, solvent-based wire coatings and motor part encapsulation materials and processes.
